"The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" is a novella by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson, first published in 1886. The story follows London lawyer Utterson as he investigates the relationship between Edward Hyde, the unlikely protege of his friend Dr. Henry Jekyll, suspecting it to be founded on blackmail. The truth is worse than he could have imagined. The novella explores the idea of dual personality that led Jekyll to his experiments, and his inexorable and finally fatal descent into evil. Some of the characters from the story are: Dr. Henry Jekyll. A doctor with an amiable personality. Mr. Hyde. A pale and dwarfish man with a displeasing smile. Mr. Utterson. A lawyer. Dr. Lanyon. A mutual friend of Jekyll and Utterson. The phrase "Jekyll and Hyde" is used in vernacular to refer to people with an outwardly good but sometimes shockingly evil nature.
